> UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi: Ankalaev Seeks Title Redemption

Magomed Ankalaev enters the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi tonight carrying the most consequential kind of baggage a former champion can carry: a knockout loss that erased everything he spent seven years building. His opponent, Bogdan Guskov, accepted this fight on less than two weeks’ notice after the original opponent withdrew, and has spent the week telling anyone who will listen that he sees it as the biggest opportunity of his career. Both descriptions are accurate, and the gap between them is what makes this worth watching.

The Stakes for Ankalaev

Ankalaev (ranked #3 light heavyweight, #17 pound-for-pound in MMA Fighting’s Global Rankings) lost the UFC light heavyweight title to Alex Pereira at UFC 320 this past October — stopped in under 90 seconds in a rematch that lasted less time than most fighters’ warmups. He was originally booked to face Khalil Rountree Jr. tonight, but Rountree withdrew and Guskov stepped in. The assignment changed; the requirement did not. Ankalaev needs a win to hold his position in the title queue.

Current champion Carlos Ulberg, who won the belt from Jiri Prochazka at April’s UFC 327, is sidelined with an injury. That creates a vacancy at the top of the division’s contender race, and the winner of tonight’s main event is positioned to fill it — whether against Ulberg when he returns or in an interim title fight if the timeline extends.

Guskov’s Opportunity

Guskov (#12 light heavyweight) turned down a Blachowicz rematch at UFC Belgrade — originally scheduled for next week — when the UFC called with this offer. He and Blachowicz had fought to a majority draw at UFC 323 this past December. Guskov said the decision to accept the Ankalaev fight took him about 50 seconds.

He enters on a five-fight unbeaten run inside the octagon following his debut loss to Volkan Oezdemir in September 2023. His four wins since have all come by finish, including victories over Ryan Spann and Nikita Krylov. He has been vocal about this fight as a potential shortcut to an interim title shot: with the champion sidelined, a win over the former champion could make that conversation unavoidable.

Guskov is known for pressure, power, and unpredictability. When asked for a fight prediction, he described his bouts as “like Walido” — chaotic enough to keep a pillow handy.

The Technical Problem

Ankalaev’s strength has historically been his ability to defuse opponents who come forward aggressively. His footwork and timing are among the best in the division at range, and fighters who charge in looking for the knockout typically find themselves neutralized before they get there. That skill set applies directly to Guskov’s style.

The complicating factor is the knockout Pereira inflicted. It is impossible to know from the outside whether that loss reflects a structural vulnerability or was a singular bad night against the most dangerous knockout artist in the sport. Guskov is not Pereira, but he does have power, and the question of how Ankalaev processes an early shot — if one lands — won’t be answerable until it happens.
