The World Boxing Council (WBC) is an international boxing sanctioning organization founded on February 14, 1963 in Mexico City when representatives from 11 countries convened to form a unified world body to govern and expand professional boxing. Headquartered in Mexico City, Mexico, the WBC has grown to 161 member countries and is led by president Mauricio Sulaimán. It is one of four major sanctioning bodies — alongside the WBA, IBF, and WBO — recognized by the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The WBC sanctions championship bouts across multiple weight classes for both male and female boxers and awards several title tiers including world, silver, diamond, and commemorative championships, as well as franchise and emeritus champion designations. The organization has also extended its sanctioning into Muay Thai competition.
