> 2026 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships: Iowa Wins the Team Title, Penn State Shows Its Depth

SRC_ TheFightLife Intel READ_ ~3 MIN READ

The 2026 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships concluded at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland with Iowa capturing the team title for the 24th time in program history. The final score: Iowa 138.5 points to Penn State’s 130, with Ohio State finishing third at 97.5.

Spencer Lee’s Fourth Title

The story of the tournament was Spencer Lee’s fourth 125-pound championship, making him just the third wrestler in Division I history to claim four titles at the same weight class. Lee’s bracket included three seeded opponents, and he dispatched each via major decision or technical fall, never extending past the third period.

His dominance at 125 pounds over four years at Iowa represents the most complete individual run at that weight in the modern era of the sport.

Penn State’s Depth Was Real

Penn State’s loss came down to a single match — Greg Kerkvliet’s heavyweight title repeated, but the Nittany Lions fell short in the 149-pound bracket where their top seed went out in the semifinals. Had that held, the team title swings to Penn State. The margin between these two programs is extremely thin.

Penn State produced individual champions at heavyweight (Kerkvliet), 165 (Carter Starocci, in his final collegiate performance), and 174, which gave them the points platform to stay competitive across the full tournament.

Ohio State’s Late Push

Ohio State’s third-place finish was a significant overperformance relative to their regular season seeds. Their coaching staff has developed a system that produces tournament-ready wrestlers, and their 133-pound champion — unseeded in the tournament — became the most talked-about story of day three.

What This Means for the Sport

The sport continues to see transfer portal activity reshape teams at a level not seen before the NCAA eligibility rule changes. Multiple individual champions this year wrestled for different schools than the ones they originally signed with. The long-term implications for program-building are significant and worth watching as the portal’s effects compound through future recruiting classes.

The next major event in collegiate wrestling is the U23 World Team Trials in June, where this year’s NCAA champions will be the primary competitors.
