The New York Athletic Club (NYAC) is one of the oldest and most distinguished athletic institutions in the United States, founded on September 8, 1868, in New York City. The NYAC organized the first U.S. national championships in wrestling, boxing, and outdoor track and field, making it a founding institution of organized American combat sports. The club’s wrestling program has competed at the Olympic level continuously across more than a century, and NYAC wrestlers have represented the United States at the Olympic Games in both freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines. Notable NYAC-affiliated wrestlers include Andy Fitch (1964 Olympics, 1963 Pan American Games gold medalist) and Jason Gleasman (1996 Olympics, Greco-Roman). The club’s wrestling squad has also attracted elite collegiate standouts competing at the post-collegiate and international levels, with NYAC wrestlers regularly appearing at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials. The NYAC operates from its clubhouse in Midtown Manhattan and remains an active force in American amateur wrestling development.
