> Gleason's Gym

Gleason’s Gym is the oldest continually operating boxing gym in the United States, founded in 1937 by Peter Robert Gagliardi — who fought professionally under the name Bobby Gleason — originally in the Bronx. The gym relocated to Manhattan in 1974 and moved to its current home in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn in 1987, where it occupies the corner of Water and Adams Streets. Under longtime owner Bruce Silverglade, who took over in the 1980s, Gleason’s became the institutional heart of professional and amateur boxing in New York. The gym has hosted over 137 world champions within its walls across its nearly nine-decade history, with a roster that includes Muhammad Ali, Jake LaMotta, Roberto Durán, Mike Tyson, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Gleason’s serves professional, amateur, recreational, and community boxing programs simultaneously, making it one of the most accessible elite boxing facilities in the world. The gym has served as a filming location for major productions including Raging Bull and Million Dollar Baby. In August 2024, the city of New York co-named the adjacent corner “Gleason’s Gym Way” in recognition of the institution’s significance to the borough.
