Alliance Jiu-Jitsu is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu team and competition organization founded in 1993 by Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti together with his students Fábio Gurgel, Alexandre Paiva, and Fernando Gurgel. Romero Cavalcanti is one of six competitors promoted to black belt by Rolls Gracie before Rolls Gracie’s death in 1982, placing Alliance at the heart of Brazilian jiu-jitsu’s lineage. The team operates three flagship academies: Cavalcanti heads the global headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia; Fábio Gurgel leads the São Paulo, Brazil, location; and Alexandre Paiva heads the Rio de Janeiro academy. Fábio Gurgel is a four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Champion (1996–2001) and is widely regarded as the most decorated Alliance competitor of his generation. The team has been one of the most successful organizations in IBJJF competition history — in 2010, Alliance became the first team ever to win the European, Pan American, and World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in the same calendar year. Notable Alliance athletes include Gabi Garcia and Michael Langhi.
